The Unconscious Mirror Hidden in Emoticons and Emojis

In a messenger environment consisting only of text, ‘emoticons’ and ‘emojis’ are key tools that replace our non-verbal expressions (facial expressions, intonation, gestures).

By analyzing what kind of emoticons the other person uses in what situation, you can predict their unconscious psychological state and their liking for you with a fairly high probability.

1. Ratio of Text vs. Emoticons

  • Text-oriented conversation: Indicates a desire to form a serious relationship or give a sense of trust. Especially in the early stages, a sincere, lengthy text is a stronger green light than an emoticon.
  • Mixed text + emoji: Shows a willingness to actively share emotions. Supplementing text with emojis, like “The weather is nice today☀️,” is part of an ‘effort’ to keep the conversation from becoming boring. (Positive for liking)
  • Emoji-only transmission type (Caution Zone):
    • Mid-conversation: Intense reaction (Positive)
    • End of conversation: There is a high probability that it is a polite refusal (red light) meaning “I have nothing more to say” or “I want to end the conversation.”

2. Psychological Interpretation by Emoji Type

According to a 2024 mobile social psychology study, the frequency of use of certain types of emojis varies greatly depending on intimacy.

  1. Heart & Kiss Series (❤️, 😘, 🥰)
    • Unless it’s a same-sex friend or someone who is naturally affectionate, the appearance of a heart in the early ‘flirting’ stage between opposite sexes is a very clear signal of liking.
  2. Shyness & Bashfulness Series (🙈, 😳, 🫣)
    • It is a defense mechanism and an affectionate expression that appears when you are conscious of the other person or want to show your good side. It is evidence of a high degree of liking.
  3. Sweat & Blandness Series (😅, 💦, 🙏)
    • It is often used as an avoidance signal to distance oneself from questions that cross the line or burdensome suggestions. If this pattern continues, you may need to take a step back.

3. ‘Syncing’ of Emoticon Sets

Humans exhibit a ‘Chameleon Effect,’ unconsciously mimicking the behavior of people they like. The same is true in messengers. What if the other person suddenly buys and starts using the emoji combo (e.g., 🥹✨) or specific character emoticons that I often use?

This is a manifestation of an unconscious liking to be ‘assimilated’ with you and is one of the most powerful green lights.
